Measure understanding against high expectations
Grades should mean something. They should actually reflect the work done. When teachers incorporate student behavior, effort, etc. into grades, it only serves to lower the standard when the job of teachers should be to raise standards and challenge students. Colleges are constantly admitting high performing high school students who come dismally under-prepared for the rigors of college life. "About half of first-year college students discover that, despite excellent GPAs and getting into college, they are not ready for continued studies after high school" (Crowe, 2016). "Teachers must realize that essentially 'padding grades' is only a disservice to their students' futures while in the present it may motivate students. control behavior and respond to pressure from both parents and students" (Goodwin and Hubbell, 2013, p.48).
